Biography

Blessed José Xavier Gorosterratzu Jaunarena, also known as José de Urroz, was a Redemptorist priest in the diocese of Cuenca, Spain. He was born on August 7, 1877, in the town of Urroz de Santesteban, located in the region of Navarra, Spain. From a young age, José showed a deep devotion to the Catholic faith and a strong desire to serve God.

After completing his studies, José entered the Redemptorist Congregation, a religious order known for their commitment to preaching missions and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He was ordained a priest on July 22, 1900, and continued his ministry in various parts of Spain, always striving to spread the message of God's love and mercy.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, religious persecution escalated, and many priests and religious were targeted for their faith. Unfortunately, José Gorosterratzu became one of the victims of this persecution. He was martyred on August 10, 1936, in Cuenca, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and refusal to renounce his beliefs.

Blessed José Xavier Gorosterratzu Jaunarena's life and martyrdom symbolize his unyielding faith and dedication to his calling as a priest. His sacrifice in the face of persecution serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of staying true to our convictions, even in the most challenging of times.

In recognition of his holiness and martyrdom, José Xavier Gorosterratzu was beatified on October 13, 2013, by Pope Benedict XVI. His feast day is celebrated on August 10th, the day of his martyrdom.
