Biography

Blessed Josefa Naval Girbes was born on 11 December 1820 in Algemesi, within the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. From a young age, she showed a strong devotion to her faith, ultimately consecrating herself by a personal perpetual vow of chastity as a young woman. This vow reflected her deep commitment to a life dedicated to serving God.

Josefa was actively involved in her parish community, immersing herself in various activities and ministries. She had a particular talent for needlework, and she selflessly offered her skills to teach young girls in her own home. Through this venture, she not only imparted practical skills but also nurtured their spiritual growth through prayers and teachings.

As a member of the Third Order Secular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Teresa of Jesus, Josefa lived her life in accordance with the spirituality of the Carmelite order. This involvement served as a source of inspiration for her and deepened her devotion to the Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin held a special place in Josefa's heart, and her profound love and respect for Mary guided her in all her endeavors.

Josefa Naval Girbes passed away on 24 February 1893 due to natural causes. She was laid to rest in the parish church of Saint James in Algemesi, once again returning to the place where she had actively served her community. Recognizing the exemplary life she had led, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on 3 January 1987, recognizing her heroic virtues. Later, on 25 September 1988, Pope John Paul II beatified her, acknowledging her as a blessed servant of God.

Throughout her life, Blessed Josefa Naval Girbes touched the lives of many through her selfless dedication and commitment to her faith. Her emphasis on education and spiritual guidance led countless young girls to grow both academically and spiritually. Her unwavering devotion to the Virgin Mary continues to inspire and uplift those who follow her example. As a beacon of faith and a compassionate mentor, Josefa Naval Girbes remains a shining model of holiness for the faithful.
