Blessed Josefa Ruano García, also known as Sister Josefa of Saint John Of God, was born on July 9, 1854, in Berja, Almería, Spain. She was a dedicated nun and a member of the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly.
Throughout her life, Sister Josefa devoted herself to serving the elderly and abandoned, providing them with love, care, and spiritual guidance. Her compassion and selflessness earned her the admiration and respect of all those who came into contact with her.
However, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Sister Josefa's faith and dedication were tested to the extreme. She became a witness to the religious persecution that took place during that time and faced great danger for her commitment to her faith.
Sadly, on September 8, 1936, Sister Josefa was martyred for her beliefs in Buñol, Valencia, Spain. She courageously refused to renounce her Catholic faith and was killed because of her religious convictions.
Sister Josefa's death deeply saddened all those who knew her, but her steadfastness and unwavering commitment became an inspiration to many. Her sacrifice and martyrdom stood as a testament to her faith and devotion to God.
In recognition of her heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on December 18, 2000, and beatified her on March 11, 2001. This beatification elevated Sister Josefa to the status of "Blessed," honoring her as a model of faith for Catholics worldwide.
