Biography

Blessed Josep Gomis Martorell, also known as Josep Gomis Martorell, was born on 17 December 1894 in Reus, Tarragona, Spain. He dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church, ultimately becoming a priest in the Archdiocese of Tarragona.

Throughout his ministry, Blessed Josep Gomis Martorell demonstrated a deep commitment to his faith, and his spiritual devotion was evident in his interactions with his parishioners. He possessed a compassionate heart and was known for his willingness to assist those in need, providing guidance, counseling, and comfort to all who sought his assistance.

Unfortunately, his life was tragically cut short due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. On 6 April 1937, Blessed Josep Gomis Martorell was martyred in Barcelona, Spain, as a result of his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. He became a symbol of religious persecution during this turbulent period in Spanish history.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI, through a decree, declared him venerable on 28 June 2012. This acknowledgment affirmed that Blessed Josep Gomis Martorell had lived a life of genuine holiness and had sacrificed everything for his faith.

In a solemn ceremony in Tarragona, Spain, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Josep Gomis Martorell, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."
