Biography

Blessed Josep Ribé Coma, also known as Josep Ribé Coma or Blessed Josep Ribé, was a Claretian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is revered for his courage, faith, and commitment to his priesthood.

Josep Ribé Coma was born on October 28, 1893, in Olost, a small town in Barcelona, Spain. From an early age, he showed a strong inclination towards religious life and dedicated himself to the service of God. After completing his education, he entered the Congregation of Missionaries, Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretian Missionaries.

Throughout his formation and studies, Josep Ribé Coma exhibited exceptional dedication and a deep spiritual life. He was ordained a priest and served in various capacities within the Claretian community. Josep was admired for his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his mission.

However, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution became rampant. Anti-Catholic sentiment led to the targeting and execution of many priests and religious figures. Sadly, Josep Ribé Coma fell victim to this violence and was martyred on October 19, 1936, at Mas Claret, Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain. He remained steadfast in his faith until the end, refusing to renounce his beliefs despite intense pressure.

Blessed Josep Ribé Coma's martyrdom stands as a testimony to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Gospel. His life and death inspired many to persevere in their faith, even in the face of extreme adversity. Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Josep Ribé Coma's martyrdom on December 21, 2016, through a decree. He was officially beatified by Pope Francis on October 21, 2017, with the beatification ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Pope.

Today, the feast day of Blessed Josep Ribé Coma is celebrated on October 19th, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, he is also honored collectively on February 1st.

Blessed Josep Ribé Coma's life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Claretian priests and religious figures during a tumultuous period in Spanish history. He continues to be venerated as a model of faith, bravery, and devotion, inspiring countless people to hold fast to their beliefs even in the face of persecution.
