Biography

Blessed Joseph Sobraqués Glory, also known as Luis Damián, was a revered Catholic monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 28 March 1891 in Bouleternère, a town located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of France.

From a young age, Joseph displayed a deep devotion to his faith and a strong calling to serve God. In pursuit of his religious vocation, he joined the Marist Brothers and dedicated his life to the service of God and the education of young people.

Joseph's role as a monk involved teaching and guiding students, imbuing in them a love for knowledge and a firm foundation in Christian values. His commitment to his mission and his gentle yet firm demeanor earned him great respect and admiration among those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Tragically, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Joseph Sobraqués Glory, along with many other faithful religious and clergy, became a target of persecution due to his unwavering commitment to his faith. The Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, was a tumultuous period marked by violence and political unrest in Spain.

On 4 August 1936, Joseph was martyred in the city of Valencia, Spain, where he had been serving. He remained steadfast in his faith until the end, offering his life as a testament to his unwavering devotion to God and the Church.

Joseph's life, marked by his dedication to educating and guiding young minds, combined with his ultimate sacrifice, stands as a powerful example of faith, fortitude, and courage in the face of adversity. His unwavering commitment to his religious calling and his love for God and humanity continue to inspire and touch the lives of countless individuals.

Recognizing his exceptional virtues and martyrdom, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrology on 3 June 2013, officially declaring Joseph Sobraqués Glory as venerable. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging the sanctity of his life and his willingness to lay down his life in service of his faith.

As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Joseph Sobraqués Glory's feast day is celebrated on 4 August each year, allowing the faithful to remember and give thanks for his life, witness, and intercession.
