Biography
Blessed Juan Cano Gómez was a Catholic priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, known for his faithful service in the Bujalante community. He was born on February 28, 1863, in Villa del Río, Córdoba, Spain. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to serving God and his community through his priestly ministry.
Juan Cano Gómez received his religious formation in the diocese of Córdoba and was ordained a priest. He devoted himself to spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church, ministering to the spiritual needs of the people under his care.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which started in 1936, Juan Cano Gómez faced persecution for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Despite the dangers that surrounded him, he chose to remain steadfast, refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs.
Tragically, on August 19, 1936, in his hometown of Villa del Río, Córdoba, Spain, Blessed Juan Cano Gómez was martyred for his faith. He became a victim of the religious persecution that characterized this tumultuous time in Spanish history.
Recognizing the heroic virtue and sacrificial life of Blessed Juan Cano Gómez, Pope Francis declared him venerable on November 23, 2020. This declaration acknowledged his martyrdom and the faithful witness he bore to the Catholic faith.
On October 16, 2021, the beatification ceremony for Blessed Juan Cano Gómez took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, representing Pope Francis.
