Biography

Blessed Juan Duarte Martín was a dedicated Deacon in the diocese of Málaga, Spain, who met a tragic end during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a martyr within the Catholic Church.

Juan Duarte Martín was born on 17 March 1912 in the town of Yunquera, located in the province of Málaga, Spain. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his faith and felt a calling to serve God and the Church. His devotion led him to pursue the path of religious life, and he was ordained as a Deacon in the diocese of Málaga.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, Blessed Juan Duarte Martín found himself caught up in the hostilities that plagued the nation. Despite the dangers and risks posed by the widespread violence, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his religious duties and continued to serve the faithful.

Sadly, on 5 November 1936, in the town of Alora, Málaga, Juan Duarte Martín became a victim of religious persecution. He was martyred for his unwavering faith and dedication to his religious calling, sacrificing his own life in defense of the Church.

Blessed Juan Duarte Martín's martyrdom did not go unnoticed within the Catholic Church. On 1 June 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized his martyrdom through a decree, acknowledging his heroic sacrifice for the sake of his faith. This decree paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 28 October 2007, also performed by Pope Benedict XVI.

Today, Blessed Juan Duarte Martín's feast day is celebrated on 5 November each year. As a martyr of the Spanish Civil War, he serves as a significant symbol of courage, faith, and devotion to the Christian community in Spain and beyond. His memory and example continue to inspire Catholics around the world, particularly those facing persecution for their beliefs.
