Biography

Blessed Juan Lucas Manzanares, also known as Braulio Carlos, was a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers. He was born on December 10, 1913, in Cortijo-Lorca, Murcia, Spain. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the education of young people.

Juan Lucas Manzanares entered the religious life and joined the De La Salle Brothers, an order founded by Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle with a mission to provide quality education to children and youths, especially those from marginalized communities. He demonstrated a deep love for God and a genuine commitment to the Lasallian charism of touching hearts and transforming lives through education.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was rampant. Brother Juan Lucas Manzanares became a victim of this persecution due to his religious convictions. On February 23, 1937, in Madrid, Spain, he was martyred for his faith and commitment to his religious vocation.

The life and martyrdom of Brother Juan Lucas Manzanares were recognized by the Catholic Church. On December 19, 2011, he was venerated by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree recognizing him as a martyr. This veneration acknowledges Brother Juan Lucas Manzanares' sacrifice in giving his life for Christ. Subsequently, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, further acknowledging his holy witness and martyrdom.

Although specific details about his representation are not provided, it is likely that since he was a member of the De La Salle Brothers, his representation would include the traditional symbols associated with the order, such as a book, quill pen, or a globe. These symbols represent his dedication to education and the spread of knowledge, as well as the global reach of the Lasallian mission.

Blessed Juan Lucas Manzanares serves as an inspiration to all those committed to education, faith, and the values of the De La Salle Brothers. His life and martyrdom remind us of the sacrifices made by many during times of persecution and the unwavering commitment to serving others even in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on February 23rd each year, providing an opportunity to reflect on his life, teachings, and the importance of Catholic education.
