Biography
Blessed Juan Nuñez Orcajo, also known as Brother Juan Nuñez Orcajo, was a lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was born on September 14, 1882, in Fontloso, a small village in Burgos, Spain.
Juan Nuñez Orcajo dedicated his life to serving God and the Church as a lay brother. He joined the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians or the Congregation of the Mission, which was founded by St. Vincent de Paul. The Vincentians are a religious order of priests and brothers committed to serving the poor and marginalized in society.
During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Spain faced intense social and political upheaval that led to violent confrontations between various factions. It was during this period that Brother Juan Nuñez Orcajo suffered martyrdom for his faith.
On October 23, 1936, in Vallecas, Madrid, Brother Juan was martyred for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith. He steadfastly held on to his beliefs, even in the face of persecution and threats to his life. His courage and unwavering commitment to Christ made him a symbol of faith and inspiration to others.
His exemplary life and martyrdom did not go unnoticed, and on March 23, 2017, Pope Francis officially recognized Brother Juan Nuñez Orcajo's martyrdom. The Holy Father declared him "Blessed Juan Nuñez Orcajo," a title that signifies his beatitude and sanctity. This proclamation by Pope Francis was a testament to the heroic virtue and sacrifice displayed by Brother Juan throughout his life.
Furthermore, on November 11, 2017, a formal beatification ceremony was held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, to honor Blessed Juan Nuñez Orcajo. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, emphasizing the significance of this blessed servant of God within the Catholic Church.
Today, Blessed Juan Nuñez Orcajo is venerated as a martyr and a model of faith.
