Biography

Blessed Julián Torrijo Sánchez, also known as Brother Elías Julián, was born on 17 November 1900 in Torrijo del Campo, Teruel, Spain. At the tender age of one day, he was baptized and began his lifelong journey of faith. His deep devotion to Catholicism and his willingness to serve the Lord led him to join the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Cambrils, Spain on 13 November 1916.

After joining the religious order, Blessed Julián dedicated himself to the vocation of teaching and youth ministry. Starting in 1920, he served as an educator at several schools, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless young people. His commitment to educating and guiding the youth in the ways of the faith became a hallmark of his life.

However, amidst the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Julián faced immense challenges and hardships. His unwavering faith and fervent devotion to Christ led him to the path of martyrdom. In 1936, he was imprisoned for his religious beliefs and ultimately faced execution. On 22 November 1936, he was martyred in Picadero de Paterna, Valencia, Spain, becoming a symbol of unwavering faith and sacrifice in the face of adversity.

Recognizing his steadfast devotion and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared Blessed Julián Torrijo Sánchez a martyr on 20 December 1999, issuing a decree of martyrdom. This acknowledgment of his virtuous life and martyrdom was further solidified when Pope John Paul II beatified him on 11 March 2001.
