Biography

Blessed Katarzyna Faron, also known as Celestyna Faron, Catherine Faron, or Celestine Faron, was born on 24 April 1913 in Zabrzez, Malopolskie, Poland. Orphaned at the age of five, she was taken in by childless relatives who raised her with love and care.

Katarzyna's deep faith and desire to serve others led her to join the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate in 1930. Taking the religious name Celestyna, she made perpetual vows on 15 September 1938. During her time as a religious sister, she served as a catechist and kindergarten teacher, working diligently to educate and guide the younger generation in their Catholic faith.

When World War II broke out, Celestyna demonstrated immense courage and selflessness. She ran an orphanage, providing shelter, care, and love to the vulnerable children who had lost their families due to the violence and chaos of war. Despite the constant threat posed by the Nazi regime, she also continued her work as a catechist, ensuring that the Catholic teachings and values were upheld amidst the turmoil.

However, Celestyna's brave actions did not go unnoticed by the Gestapo, the brutal secret police of the Nazi regime. She was arrested on 19 February 1942 in Brzozów, Poland, charged with conspiracy against the Nazis. Subsequently, she was imprisoned in Jaslo and Tarnów, both in Poland, before being transferred to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp.

In Auschwitz, Celestyna was subjected to grueling labor, forced to dig ditches under inhumane conditions. The harsh labor, combined with the dreadful living conditions, took a toll on her health. She contracted tuberculosis and typhoid, and despite her strong spirit, her health eventually deteriorated to the point of complete collapse.

On Easter morning, 9 April 1944, Celestyna Faron breathed her last in Auschwitz concentration camp, in the town of Oswiecim, Malopolskie, Nazi-occupied Poland. She died as a martyr, having stood strong in her faith and willingly giving her life for the sake of others.

Her incredible holiness and sacrifice did not go unrecognized. On 26 March 1999, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues. Just a few months later, on 13 June 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Katarzyna Faron during a solemn ceremony in Warsaw, Poland. She now stands as one of the blessed, admired for her unwavering faith, unwavering love, and unwavering commitment to serving others, even in the face of extreme persecution and suffering.

Blessed Katarzyna Faron's feast days are celebrated on 9 April and 12 June, as part of the commemoration of the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Her life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration and reminder of the extraordinary lengths some individuals go to in order to uphold their faith and protect the vulnerable, even in the darkest of times.
