Biography

Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi, also known as Clement Sheptytsky, Clemente Šeptyckyj, or Klymentij Sheptyckyj, was a Greek Catholic Saint and martyr. He was born on November 17, 1869, in Prylbychi, Lviv District, Ukraine. He was the younger brother of the Servant of God Metropolitan Roman Oleksandr Maria Sheptytskyi, a prominent figure in the Greek Catholic Church.

Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi dedicated his life to the service of God and entered the monastery of Saint Theodore the Studite in 1911, at the age of 42. He pursued his theological studies in Innsbruck, Austria, deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith.

On August 28, 1915, Klymentii was ordained as a priest. He served as the Prior of the Studite monastery at Univ and later became its Abbot in 1944. During World War II, he exemplified his deep commitment to the teachings of Christ by providing refuge to persecuted Jews, risking his own life to protect them from the horrors of the Holocaust.

His unwavering faith and fearless actions attracted the attention of the NKVD, the Soviet secret police, who arrested him on June 5, 1947, for his Christian beliefs. As a result, Klymentii Sheptytskyi was sentenced to eight years of hard labor in the forced labor camps, where he endured immense suffering.

Tragically, Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi died on May 1, 1951, while imprisoned in the Volodymyr-Volynskyi prison. His death was the ultimate testament to his unwavering commitment to his faith and his willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of others.

Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi is venerated as a martyr, recognized for his heroic virtues and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his religious beliefs. On April 24, 2001, Pope John Paul II officially decreed his martyrdom, acknowledging the exemplary life and death of Klymentii. Later, on June 27, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him during a special ceremony held in Ukraine.

Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi's feast days are celebrated on May 1, the day of his death, and on June 27, alongside other Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe.

Throughout his life, Blessed Klymentii Sheptytskyi embodied the virtues of courage, compassion, and unwavering faith. His selfless acts of providing refuge to persecuted Jews during World War II and his unyielding devotion to his beliefs in the face of grave persecution stand as a testament to his extraordinary character. Today, he serves as an inspiration and example of Christian love, sacrifice, and devotion for believers around the world.
