Biography

Blessed León Alesanco Maestro, also known as Brother Luis Gonzaga and Lleó Alesanco i Maestro, was a Benedictine priest in the Subiaco Congregation. He was born on 22 May 1882 in San Millán de la Cogolla, La Rioja, Spain. Throughout his life, León dedicated himself to the service of God and his community.

León entered the Benedictine Order and took the religious name of Brother Luis Gonzaga. He exemplified the order's values of prayer, contemplation, and service. He faithfully served as a priest, providing spiritual guidance and support to those in need. León had a deep love for the monastic life and found great solace in the peaceful surroundings of the monastery.

Sadly, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, León faced persecution and violence due to his unwavering commitment to his faith. He was martyred on 30 November 1936 in Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his beliefs led to his untimely death.

Following his martyrdom, León was buried in the Cripta de los Monjes Mártires at the Montserrat Basilica in Barcelona. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage for those seeking solace and inspiration from his life and sacrifice.

In recognition of his courage and steadfast faith, León was venerated on 28 June 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree of martyrdom. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, celebrating the beatification ceremony in Tarragona, Spain.

Blessed León Alesanco Maestro serves as a powerful example of unwavering faith and commitment to God, even in the face of adversity and persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire many faithful Catholics around the world, reminding them of the profound sacrifice made by those who stand firm in their beliefs.
