Biography

Blessed Leoncio López Ramos, also known as Father Eladio, was a Spanish priest and member of the Picpus Fathers, a religious congregation dedicated to the service of God and the Church. He was born on November 16, 1904, in Laroco, Orense, Spain.

From an early age, Leoncio felt a strong calling to the priesthood and embarked on a path of religious formation. He entered the Picpus Fathers and underwent rigorous training to become a priest, dedicating his life to the service of others and the spread of the Gospel. Leoncio was known for his humility, compassion, and unwavering faith.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was rampant, and many priests, religious, and laypeople suffered martyrdom for their beliefs. Leoncio found himself caught up in this tumultuous period, as he fearlessly continued his pastoral work despite the danger.

Tragically, on August 8, 1936, Father Eladio was martyred in Madrid, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith. In the face of persecution, he remained true to his calling and heroically stood as a witness to Christ.

The faithful, recognizing the holiness and courage of Father Leoncio López Ramos, began to venerate him as a martyr soon after his death. It was later officially acknowledged by Pope Benedict XVI on July 3, 2009, with the decree of martyrdom.
