Biography

Blessed Libania of Busano, also known as Libania of Barbania, was born into the noble family of Lord Armerico of Barbania, Italy. She was descended from the dukes of Lombardy, and her aristocratic upbringing provided her with a privileged life. However, at the tender age of 15, Libania felt a profound calling to dedicate her life to God in the religious vocation.

Fleeing from an arranged marriage, Libania sought refuge at the abbey of San Benigno Futtuaria. It was within the walls of this Benedictine monastery that she found solace and guidance under the spiritual direction of Saint William, who imparted upon her the habit of the Benedictine order. Libania's devotion and commitment to a life of prayer and service led her to embrace the monastic life wholeheartedly.

Recognizing Libania's fervent desire to establish a new Benedictine community, her father, Lord Armerico, generously funded the construction of the monastery of Saint Thomas in Busano, Italy. This monastery would serve as the home for Libania and a group of sister Benedictines that she gathered around her. Libania was appointed as the first abbess of this new foundation, and she brought her unwavering dedication and leadership qualities to guide the community in their spiritual journey.

Blessed Libania of Busano's life was marked by profound piety, humility, and a deep love for God. As an abbess, she devoted herself to nurturing the souls of her fellow sisters, instilling in them a passion for prayer, contemplation, and the observance of the Benedictine rule. Libania was known for her spiritual guidance, wisdom, and gentle manner in which she approached her role as abbess.

On the 8th of April, in the year 1064, Blessed Libania peacefully passed away in the church at the monastery of Saint Thomas in Busano, Turin, Italy. It is said that on the night of her death, an angel appeared in her cell and guided her to the church, where she breathed her last. In order to protect her relics from potential destruction, Libania was buried in a hidden location within the church.

Though no specific representation has been noted for Blessed Libania, she is remembered as a woman of great virtue and holiness. Her feast day is celebrated on the 8th of April to honor her life and example as a dedicated Benedictine nun and abbess in Busano.
