Biography
Blessed Lluís Plana Rabugent, also known as Lluís Plana, was a devoted member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 20 July 1914 in La Cellera, Girona, Spain, into a deeply religious family. Lluís Plana exhibited a strong inclination towards a life of faith and service from an early age.
In 1931, at the age of 17, he professed his religious vows as a Claretian. Lluís Plana's dedication to his vocation led him to live a life of prayer, contemplation, and service, earnestly striving to grow in holiness. He had a remarkable zeal and love for God and others, which inspired those around him.
Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Lluís Plana was martyred for his faith on 26 July 1936 in Lleida, Spain. Along with numerous other Claretians and religious martyrs, he sacrificially gave his life for his unwavering commitment to Christ.
For years, the memory of Lluís Plana and his fellow Claretian Martyrs was honored and venerated by the faithful. Finally, on 21 December 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized their martyrdom and declared them as "Blessed," acknowledging their witness to faith even in the face of persecution.
Further, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony of Lluís Plana and 108 Spanish Claretian Martyrs at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was a grand occasion, witnessed by a multitude of faithful, and symbolized the Church's recognition of their heroic virtue and their ultimate sacrifice for their faith.
Blessed Lluís Plana Rabugent's feast day is celebrated on 26 July, the day of his martyrdom, as well as on 1 February, alongside the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. These feast days are an opportunity for the faithful to remember and honor his life, to draw inspiration from his martyrdom, and to seek his intercession.
As a Claretian martyr who faithfully followed the footsteps of Jesus Christ, Blessed Lluís Plana Rabugent's life serves as a powerful example of profound faith, unwavering dedication, and selfless love for God and others.
