Biography

Blessed Lluis Casanovas Vila, also known as Brother Hildebrand Maria, was a revered Catholic figure and a member of the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation. He was born on 23 January 1918 in Hostalets de BalenyÖ, a small town near Barcelona, Spain.

Lluis Casanovas Vila grew up in a devout Catholic family and displayed exceptional piety from an early age. His strong faith led him to join the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation, where he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Hildebrand Maria faced immense challenges. The civil war waged from 1936 to 1939, deeply dividing Spanish society. Amidst this violent conflict, Brother Hildebrand Maria fearlessly upheld his religious beliefs and steadfastly maintained his commitment to peace and justice.

Unfortunately, his unwavering dedication to his faith eventually led to his martyrdom. On 28 July 1936, Brother Hildebrand Maria was martyred in Montcada, a municipality near Barcelona. His tragic death was a result of the persecution suffered by many Catholics during the Spanish Civil War, particularly by those who held religious positions.

Following his untimely death, Brother Hildebrand Maria was laid to rest in the Cripta de los Monjes Mártires, located inside the Montserrat Basilica in Barcelona. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage and devotion for many faithful believers.

Recognizing Lluis Casanovas Vila's profound faith and sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI venerated him on 28 June 2012 through a decree of martyrdom. This official recognition was a testament to his exemplary life and unwavering dedication to his faith.

The beatification of Blessed Lluis Casanovas Vila took place on 13 October 2013, with Pope Francis leading the ceremony in Tarragona, Spain. During the beatification, the Catholic Church celebrated and honored his life, highlighting his virtuous character and the enduring impact he had on the faithful.

Today, Blessed Lluis Casanovas Vila serves as an inspiration to Catholics worldwide, reminding them of the importance of steadfast faith and the ultimate sacrifice some individuals make for their beliefs. His life and martyrdom continue to be celebrated on his feast day, which falls on 28 July each year.
