Blessed Louis-√âdouard Cestac was born on January 6, 1801, in Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France. As a child, he suffered from neuralgia, a painful condition that rendered him unable to speak for three years. However, he experienced a miraculous healing after his mother developed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This early encounter with the power of faith had a profound impact on Louis-√âdouard's life.
Driven by a strong calling to serve God and his fellow human beings, Louis-Édouard pursued his education at the seminary of Aire-sur-l'Adour and later at the Sulpician college in Paris. It was during his time in Paris that he forged a lasting friendship with Saint Michael Garicoïts, a relationship that would greatly influence his spiritual journey.
On December 17, 1825, Louis-Édouard was ordained a priest in the diocese of Bayonne, France. He dedicated his life to ministering to the needs of others, particularly orphans, abandoned children, and young people who found themselves in desperate situations. In 1831, he served as a vicar at the cathedral of Bayonne, where he continued to touch the lives of many through his pastoral care and guidance.
In 1836, Father Louis embarked on a groundbreaking endeavor, establishing a ministry specifically aimed at helping those who had fallen into dire circumstances. He sought to provide support and assistance to individuals who had migrated to the city in search of work but found themselves stranded and vulnerable, often forced into prostitution. Father Louis' compassion and dedication led these individuals to a safe haven where they could rebuild their lives.
Realizing the need for a more permanent structure to carry out this noble mission, Father Louis relocated his ministry to what later became known as the convent of Notre-Dame du Refuge (Our Lady of Refuge) on June 9, 1839. With the collaboration of his sister, Servant of God Marie-Louise-Élise Cestac, and several of the girls who had experienced his care, Father Louis founded the Serviteurs de Marie (Servants of Mary) in 1852. This religious congregation continued the work of providing shelter, education, and rehabilitation to vulnerable individuals, offering hope and a chance for a brighter future.
Father Louis also demonstrated a deep concern for the rural areas surrounding Bayonne. He actively promoted education, particularly the establishment of schools in these underserved regions. Additionally, he tirelessly worked to improve agricultural practices, advocating for advancements and sharing his knowledge to benefit the local community. In appreciation of his efforts and commitment, Father Louis was bestowed with the Legion of Honor in 1865.
Blessed Louis-√âdouard Cestac's life was characterized by selflessness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God and his fellow human beings. He passed away on March 27, 1868, in Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, leaving behind a legacy of love and service. Recognizing his remarkable virtues, Pope Paul VI declared him venerable on November 13, 1976. Later, on May 31, 2015, Pope Francis beatified him, affirming his exceptional sanctity and presenting him as a role model for all Catholics. The beatification celebration took place at the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie in Bayonne, France, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
