Biography

Blessed Luca Passi, born on 22 January 1789 in Bergamo, Italy, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the 19th century. He hailed from a noble family in Venice and devoted his life to serving God and his fellow human beings.

On 13 March 1813, Luca Passi was ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Venice, Italy. With a deep sense of spiritual devotion, he felt a calling to establish religious communities that would focus on education and charitable works.

In pursuit of these ideals, Blessed Luca Passi founded two significant religious congregations. Firstly, in 1834, he established the Institute of the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy. This congregation aimed to provide a quality education for girls and young women, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Guided by the teachings of Saint Dorothy, the order became known for its dedication to education, compassion, and service.

Additionally, Luca Passi founded the Pious Society of Saint Dorothy. This society aimed to support the works and mission of the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy, emphasizing the values of education, spirituality, and social justice. Together, these two institutions played a vital role in the growth and development of Catholic education in Italy, particularly in the region of Venice.

Blessed Luca Passi dedicated his entire life to these endeavors, tirelessly working to advance the cause of education and the service of God. His commitment and vision left a lasting impact on both the religious and social fabric of his time.

Blessed Luca Passi's life came to an end on 18 April 1866, in Venice, Italy. He passed away peacefully of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of faith, education, and service. He was laid to rest at the mother house of the Institute of the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy in Venice, Italy.

Recognizing his exemplary life and virtues, Pope Benedict XVI declared Blessed Luca Passi venerable on 6 July 2007, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Later, on 13 April 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Luca Passi, affirming his sanctity and the impact of his works. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, Italy, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Today, Blessed Luca Passi stands as an inspiration to those committed to the pursuit of education, social justice, and the values of the Catholic faith. His legacy continues to shine through the numerous educational institutions and charitable works carried out by the Institute of the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy and the Pious Society of Saint Dorothy.
