Biography

Blessed Lucie Khambang, also known as Lucia or Lusia, was born on 22 January 1917 in Ban Wiang Khuk, Nong Khai, Thailand. She was the beloved daughter of James and Mary Dam May Li. Lucie was baptized on 10 March 1917, and her faith journey continued to flourish as she received the sacraments of Confirmation and made her First Communion on 4 June 1925.

Filled with a deep love for God and a calling to serve others, Lucie joined the Congregation of the Lovers of the Cross. She commenced her novitiate on 18 October 1935, dedicating herself to a life of prayer, service, and devotion to her religious community. After completing her novitiate, she professed her final vows in Siengvang, Laos, on 15 October 1937, joyfully committing her life to God and His people.

Following her profession, Blessed Lucie was assigned as a school teacher in the early 1940s. With great zeal and love, she diligently educated and cared for her students, nurturing their intellectual and spiritual growth. Lucie's dedication and commitment to her vocation as an educator were truly remarkable, as she sought to instill in her students the values of faith, knowledge, and love for God.

Sadly, during this time, a wave of anti-Christian persecutions began with the French withdrawal from Thailand, threatening the lives of many faithful Catholics like Lucie. These difficult circumstances did not deter her from proclaiming her faith and living it with utmost courage and conviction.

Tragically, on 26 December 1940, Lucie Khambang was martyred for her unwavering commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. She was shot and killed in the cemetery of Ban Songkhon, Mukdahan, Thailand, as she bravely defended her faith against those who sought to destroy it.

Lucie's profound witness of faith and sacrificial offering of her life did not go unrecognized. Her heroic virtues and martyrdom were officially acknowledged by the Catholic Church, and on 1 September 1988, Pope John Paul II granted her the title of Venerable.

Further affirming Lucie's sanctity and the impact of her life, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 22 October 1989. This beatification declaration honored her exceptional fortitude, selflessness, and dedication to Christ, as well as the enduring legacy of her witness that continues to inspire and uplift countless believers around the world.

Blessed Lucie Khambang, a true model of faith, love, and courage, is venerated by the Catholic faithful, particularly on her feast day celebrated annually on 26 December. Her life serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering faith and extraordinary strength that can be found in the hearts of God's faithful followers, encouraging us all to remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ in the face of adversity.
