Biography

Blessed Luis Almécija Lázaro was born on April 23, 1883, in Illar, Almería, Spain. He came from a devout farming family and was baptized just three days after his birth. Luis grew up amidst a strong Catholic environment, with his sister eventually becoming a Poor Clare prioress and two of his nephews becoming priests.

Luis's deep religious calling led him to pursue studies in seminaries in Almería and Granada, Spain. After years of dedicated learning and spiritual formation, he was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Granada on May 18, 1906.

As a newly ordained priest, Luis began serving as a parish priest in various locations. In 1911, he was assigned to Alic√∫n, Spain, where he faced the challenging task of starting a parish from scratch amidst the ruins of a church. Undeterred by the difficult circumstances, he worked tirelessly to rebuild the faith community there.

Two years later, in 1913, Luis was transferred to Huécija, Spain, where he became a beloved pastor. He served the people of Huécija for many years, guiding them through their spiritual journey and offering them support and solace. His caring and compassionate nature earned him the admiration and love of his parishioners.

Tragically, during the tumultuous Spanish Civil War, on August 19, 1936, Luis was taken captive by anti-Catholic forces. Initially imprisoned in Alhama de Almería, his family managed to secure his release by paying a bribe. However, Father Luis was soon captured again and imprisoned in Huécija itself.

Facing persecution and the gravest of threats, the guards offered Luis his freedom if he would spit on the cross that he carried. But rather than renounce his faith, Luis responded to this perverse demand by kissing the cross lovingly and embracing it as a symbol of his unyielding devotion to Christ.

His steadfast refusal to forsake his beliefs and loyalty to the Catholic Church led to his martyrdom. On August 24, 1936, in Puente de los Calvos, Ráglos, Almería, Spain, Luis was brutally executed for his faith.

Recognizing his exceptional witness and sacrifice, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on June 14, 2016, thereby recognizing Luis Almécija Lázaro as a martyr of the Catholic Church. This acknowledgment was followed by his beatification on March 25, 2017, in a solemn ceremony held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain. The beatification ceremony, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, emphasized the holy life and martyrdom of Blessed Luis Almécija Lázaro, inspiring countless faithful to follow his example of unwavering faith even amid times of great trial.
