Biography

Blessed Ioannes Minami Gorozaemon, also known as Blessed Ioannes Minami, was a layman in the diocese of Fukuoka, Japan during the late 16th century. He was born around the year 1568 in Yamato, Kagoshima, Japan. Not much is known about his early life, but he is mentioned as being a married man to Blessed Magdalena Minami, and they were blessed with a son whom they named Blessed Ludovicus Minami.

During this period in Japan, Christians were facing intense persecution due to the country's government banning Christianity and enforcing strict measures to eradicate the faith. Despite the risks, Blessed Ioannes remained steadfast in his Catholic beliefs and actively practiced his faith. He was known for his strong commitment to his family and community, always striving to be a witness of Christ's love.

Blessed Ioannes and his wife, Magdalena, together with their son, Blessed Ludovicus, were fervent followers of Christ and actively involved in their local Catholic community in Fukuoka. However, their faith would soon be severely tested. On December 8, 1603, Blessed Ioannes, along with many other Christians, was arrested in Kumamoto, Japan for his refusal to renounce his faith. It was on this day that he would join the ranks of the holy martyrs.

Although the details of his martyrdom are not explicitly mentioned, it is believed that Blessed Ioannes Minami Gorozaemon suffered severe torture and imprisonment due to his loyalty to Christ. He courageously endured these hardships with unwavering faith and remained a faithful witness of the Gospel until the end. On that fateful day, he shed his blood for the sake of his beliefs, attaining the crown of martyrdom.

Blessed Ioannes Minami Gorozaemon was venerated on June 1, 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI, who declared a decree on his martyrdom. This act of veneration confirmed the sanctity of his life and martyrdom. On November 24, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Blessed Ioannes Minami along with 187 other martyrs of Japan. The beatification ceremony was held at the Nagasaki Prefectural Baseball Park (Big N Stadium) and was presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins.

As a blessed of the Catholic Church, Blessed Ioannes Minami Gorozaemon is honored annually on the feast days of December 8 and July 1 (Diocese of Fukuoka, Japan). He serves as a beacon of inspiration and a powerful intercessor for all Christians, especially those facing persecution or struggling to live out their faith in challenging circumstances.
