3pm on 10 January 1883 in El Suncho, Córdoba, Argentina of natural causes; interred in the cathedral of Córdoba; his heart was enshrined in an urn and venerated as a relic at the Franciscan convent in Catamarca, Argentina; the heart was stolen from the urn on 30 October 1990; the heart was found abandoned nearby on 7 November 1990; no suspect was identified in the theft; the heart was stolen from the urn on 20 January 2008 by Gemain Jasani who said that he had thrown it into a trash can several blocks from the convent; he was charged with the theft, but the heart was never recovered

Beatified

13 March 2021 by Pope Francis; the beatification recognition was celebrated in Catamarca, Argentina; the beatification miracle involved the cure of a case of chronic osteomyelitis in the femur of a small girl after doctors had given up and planned to amputate the limb

16 December 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI (decree of heroic virtues)

Biography

Blessed Mamerto Esquiú Y Medina, also known as Mamerto de la Ascensión Esquiú, was born on 11 May 1826 in San José de Piedra Blanca, Catamarca, Argentina. He was the son of Santiago Esquiú and María de las Nieves Medina. From an early age, Mamerto felt a deep calling to religious life, and it was said that he would even wear a brown Franciscan habit as a child.
