Biography

Blessed Manuel Fernándezherba Pereira, also known as Manuel Fernández Herbona, was born on September 30, 1878, in Lisbon, Portugal. He received his education at Piarist schools in Celanova, Spain, where he demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for the hard sciences. Later, he continued his studies at the seminary in Tuy, Spain.

In his pursuit of a religious vocation, Manuel joined the Dominican Order in Padrón, Spain, on November 20, 1895. During his years as a Dominican friar, he served in various locations, including Cuevas de Vera, Spain, and Caracas, Venezuela, where he served as a chapel organist. Manuel was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to the service of God and his community.

In 1918 and 1919, he taught chemistry and French at a school in Almagro, Spain, exhibiting not only his intellectual gifts but also his commitment to education. Due to his exemplary qualities and leadership skills, Manuel was chosen as Provincial Prior, serving in this role from 1919 to 1935 and contributing to the administration of the Dominican Order.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted during Manuel's lifetime, becoming a period marred by violence and religious persecution. Blessed Manuel Fernándezherba Pereira fell victim to this persecution and was martyred for his faith on August 14, 1936, in El Picado, Almagro, Ciudad Real, Spain.

Following his martyrdom, Blessed Manuel's relics were enshrined in Seville, Spain, where they continue to be venerated by the faithful. Recognizing his sacrifice and dedication, Pope Francis proclaimed him blessed on June 18, 2022, during a beatification ceremony held at the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in Sevilla. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, honoring the life and martyrdom of this faithful Dominican friar.

Blessed Manuel Fernándezherba Pereira is remembered for his intellectual prowess, commitment to education, and his unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
