Biography

Blessed Manuel Mateo Calvo, also known as Brother Claudio José, was a prominent member of the Christian Brothers who met a martyr's fate during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on October 5, 1902, in the town of Aliaga, Teruel, Spain. Growing up, Manuel exhibited a deep faith and a strong commitment to serving others.

Manuel joined the Christian Brothers, a religious institute founded to provide education and support to disadvantaged children and youth. As a Brother, he embraced the core values of his order, such as compassion, humility, and dedication to the well-being of young people. His genuine concern for the future of society, especially the education and formation of the youth, became his life's mission.

Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought immense suffering and persecution for Catholics and religious orders.
