Biography

Blessed María De La Concepción Barrecheguren García, also known as Conchita Barrecheguren or María de la Concepción del Perpetuo Socorro, was a young lay woman who lived in the archdiocese of Granada, Spain. She was born on 27 November 1905 in Granada and was baptized at the age of 11 days.

Conchita's father, Venerable Francisco Barrecheguren Montagut, took on the responsibility of her religious education. Through his guidance, Conchita grew up deeply devoted to her faith, developing a strong love for the Rosary, the Way of the Cross, and Eucharistic adoration. This upbringing instilled in her a profound spirituality and a deep desire to serve God and others.

From a young age, Conchita showed a compassionate heart and a strong commitment to helping those in need. She dedicated her time to caring for the poor and marginalized, showcasing a true Christian love for her neighbor. She also actively participated in teaching catechism and collaborated with various groups that fostered Marian devotions, demonstrating her strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Despite her young age, Conchita's faith and virtuous life inspired those around her. She was admired for her selflessness, humility, and unwavering trust in God. Her exemplary life of holiness and service left a lasting impact on the people she encountered.

Tragically, Conchita's life was cut short by tuberculosis, which claimed her on 13 May 1927 in Granada, Spain. She was just 21 years old at the time of her passing. Conchita was laid to rest in the sanctuary of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Granada, a place of great significance and devotion.

Many years after her death, Conchita's virtues and holiness were officially recognized by the Catholic Church. On 5 May 2020, Pope Francis declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues. Then, on 6 May 2023, she was beatified by Pope Francis in a solemn ceremony held at the Cathedral of La Encarnación del Señor in Granada, Spain.

The beatification miracle attributed to Conchita's intercession involved the cure of a 16-month-old girl from septic shock and multiple organ failure in March 2014. This miraculous healing served as a testament to Conchita's powerful intercession and sanctity.

Blessed María De La Concepción Barrecheguren García continues to be venerated as a model of holiness and devotion. Her life of faith, selflessness, and dedication to God and others continues to inspire and challenge believers to live more fully in accordance with the teachings of Christ.
