Biography

Blessed María Pilar Gullón Yturriaga, also known as Blessed María Pilar of Saint Francis Borgia, was born on 29 May 1911 in Madrid, Spain. She was the eldest of four children born to Manuel Gullón and Pilar Yturriaga. From a young age, María Pilar exhibited deep faith and a strong desire to serve others.

As a devout Catholic, María Pilar became an active member of Catholic Action and the Daughters of Mary in the diocese of Astorga, Spain. In this role, she dedicated herself to teaching catechism to children and caring for the sick in their homes. Her compassionate nature and unwavering commitment to her faith made her a beloved figure in her community.

However, María Pilar's life took a dramatic turn during the Spanish Civil War. A lifelong laywoman and driven by her desire to help those in need, she trained and served as a Red Cross nurse at the frontlines. Her courageous efforts in providing medical aid to the wounded demonstrated her selflessness and dedication in the face of adversity.

Tragically, on 27 October 1936, María Pilar was arrested by anti-Catholic militia forces. In prison, she endured unimaginable abuse, including physical assault and rape. Despite the unimaginable torment she suffered, María Pilar remained steadfast in her devotion to her faith. She was ordered to renounce Christianity, but she resolutely refused, proclaiming her allegiance to Christ the King.

On the following day, around noon on 28 October 1936, María Pilar was executed by being shot in a field near Pola de Somiedo, Asturias, Spain. Even at this critical moment, she was given one last chance to save herself by renouncing her faith, to which she responded with uncompromising conviction, saying, "Long live Spain, long live Christ the King."

Blessed María Pilar was buried in a mass grave near the execution site, a symbol of the brutal persecution endured by many faithful Catholics during this turbulent period in Spanish history. In 1938, she was re-interred in Astorga, Spain, and later, in 1948, her remains were moved to the cathedral of Astorga as a testament to her martyrdom and devotion to God.

Maria Pilar's exemplary life of faith and sacrifice did not go unrecognized. On 11 June 2019, Pope Francis decreed her martyrdom, further acknowledging her unwavering commitment to Christ. Then, on her 110th birthday, 29 May 2021, Pope Francis officially beatified her during a ceremony held at the Cathedral of Santa María in Astorga, Spain.

Today, Blessed María Pilar Gullón Yturriaga is venerated as a courageous saint, admired for her unwavering faith, dedication to her community, and her ultimate sacrifice. Her life serves as a powerful inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith even in the face of adversity.
