Biography

Blessed Marco Criado, also known as Marco Criado de Castilla, was born on April 25, 1522, in Andujar, Spain. From an early age, he displayed exceptional intelligence and a thirst for knowledge, distinguishing himself as a clever and gifted youth.

At the age of fourteen, Marco Criado joined the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and the Captives, commonly known as the Trinitarians, in 1536. This religious order had a primary mission of ransoming Christian captives enslaved by Muslims during the turbulent times of the Crusades.

Marco Criado's dedication to his faith and his studies led him to pursue his education in Andujar, Spain. He advanced academically, impressing his mentors and fellow Trinitarians with his intellectual prowess. Recognizing his potential, his superiors ordained him as a priest.

As a priest, Marco Criado embarked upon a path of service, preaching to both Christian and Muslim populations in the areas of Almeria and Granada. His ability to engage with people from different religious backgrounds and build bridges of understanding made him an effective evangelist.

Despite the danger inherent in interacting with Muslims during a time of religious tensions, Marco Criado fearlessly advocated for harmony and peace between these communities. He courageously shared the Christian message, seeking to dispel misconceptions and promote dialogue among individuals of different faiths.

Unfortunately, Marco Criado's unwavering devotion to his calling and his commitment to fostering understanding became a threat to some radical factions. On September 25, 1569, near La Peza, Spain, Marco Criado was martyred by Moors who stoned him to death.

The impact of Marco Criado's life and his sacrificial death was widely acknowledged. Recognizing his exceptional holiness and the courage he displayed in the face of persecution, Pope Leo XIII beatified him on July 24, 1899, with a cultus confirmation. This beatification affirmed his blessed status and ensured his veneration within the Catholic Church.

Blessed Marco Criado serves as an example of intellectual and spiritual excellence, as well as a model of interfaith harmony. His life and martyrdom inspire believers to live their faith boldly and to build bridges of understanding, fostering compassion, and respect among divergent religious communities. September 25th stands as his feast day, a time for those devoted to his memory to honor his life and seek his intercession.
