Biography
Blessed Maria Antonia Bandrés Y Elósegui, also known as Antonita, was born on 6 March 1898 in Tolosa, Guip√∫zcoa, Spain. She was the second of fifteen children born to Ramon Bandres and Teresa Elosegui. Her father worked as an attorney, providing a comfortable upbringing for the Bandres family.
Antonita received her education from the Daughters of Jesus, a religious institute known for their commitment to education and caring for the poor. From a young age, she showed a deep sense of compassion and love for others, especially for the most vulnerable in society. In her family, Antonita was admired as a caring big sister, always ready to lend a helping hand.
As Antonita grew older, she felt a strong calling to care for the poor on the outskirts of her hometown. Answering the call, she dedicated herself to this mission, offering assistance and support to those in need. Her selflessness and kindness left a lasting impact on the lives of the people she served.
On 8 December 1915, Antonita joined the Daughters of Jesus in Salamanca, Spain. She made her religious profession on 31 May 1918, committing herself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Despite her fragile health, Antonita's faith remained steadfast and unwavering.
Shortly after making her vows, Antonita's health began to deteriorate further. However, her weakened physical state did not diminish her devout faith or her serene disposition. Instead, her suffering became an inspiration to those around her, including her fellow sisters in religious life, as well as intellectuals who were agnostics or atheists. Antonita's unwavering devotion to Mary served as a shining example to all who encountered her.
Tragically, on 27 April 1919, Blessed Maria Antonia Bandrés Y Elósegui passed away in Salamanca, Spain, due to natural causes. Even in her last moments, she was praising the Blessed Virgin Mary, singing a Marian hymn.
Recognizing her exceptional virtues, Pope John Paul II venerated Blessed Maria Antonia Bandrés Y Elósegui on 6 April 1995, decreeing her heroic virtues. Then, on 12 May 1996, Pope John Paul II beatified her at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. Her feast day is celebrated on 27 April each year, honoring her devotion to the faith and her remarkable dedication to serving the poor and marginalized.
