Biography

Blessed Mariano Climent Sanchis, also known as Brother Fidel of Puzol, was born on 8 January 1856 in Puzol, Valencia, Spain. He was the son of Mariano Climent and Mariana Sanchís. Unfortunately, Mariano was orphaned at a very young age and was subsequently raised by his maternal aunt, Josefa Sanchís.

In his early years, Mariano Climent served as a soldier, participating in the Carlist War. However, after the war, he felt a strong calling to religious life and joined the Capuchin Order in 1881. He made his perpetual profession on 17 June 1884, committing himself wholeheartedly to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Brother Fidel of Puzol was known for his strong and stoutly built physique, as well as his quiet and mature temperament. Throughout his religious life, he served in various roles, including porter, beggar, and cook, in houses and seminaries located in Barcelona, Totana, Orihuela, Massamagrell, and Valencia.

Tragically, Brother Fidel met a martyr's fate during the Spanish Civil War. On 28 September 1936, he was killed in Sagunto, Valencia, Spain, for his unwavering faith and commitment to Christ. His martyrdom is a testament to his dedication and loyalty to his religious calling.

Blessed Mariano Climent Sanchis, also known as Brother Fidel of Puzol, is remembered for his unwavering faith and dedication to a life of prayer, service, and self-sacrifice. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 11 March 2001, recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom. Pope John Paul II also approved the decree of martyrdom on 20 December 1999, venerated him as a martyr for the Catholic faith.
