Blessed Mariano De La Mata Aparicio, born on 31 December 1905 in La Puebla de Valdavia, Palencia, Spain, was one of eight children born to Martina and Manuel de la Mata Aparicio. He embarked on his journey of faith and education by studying in Valladolid, Spain. Impelled by a strong calling to serve God, Mariano joined the Augustinians on 9 September 1921, dedicating his life to the service of others.
After several years of formation and spiritual growth, Mariano took his solemn vows on 23 January 1927. He continued his studies, first in Pisuerga, Spain, and later at the monastery of Saint Maria La Vid in Burgos, Spain. Mariano's unwavering dedication and commitment to his vocation led to his ordination as a priest on 25 July 1930.
As a newly ordained priest, Mariano began teaching at the College La Encarnación in Llanes, Spain, where he left a profound impact on his students through his teaching and guidance. However, his missionary zeal pushed him to go beyond the boundaries of his homeland, and in July 1931, he embarked on a mission to Brazil.
In Brazil, Mariano devoted himself to ministering to the poorest of the poor, earning him the nickname "the messenger of charity." With deep empathy and genuine love for those in need, he worked tirelessly to alleviate suffering and bring comfort to the marginalized and abandoned. Mariano's passion for education also manifested itself in his role as a teacher and coordinator of teaching throughout the missionary region, ensuring that knowledge and learning reached even the most remote areas.
Blessed Mariano De La Mata Aparicio remained a true ambassador of God's love until his last breath. He passed away on 5 April 1983 in São Paulo, Brazil, after a battle with cancer. He was laid to rest at the church of Saint Augustine in São Paulo, where he had spent his final years serving the community.
Mariano's virtuous life and selfless dedication to the well-being of others did not go unnoticed. On 20 December 2004, Pope John Paul II proclaimed his heroic virtues, recognizing Mariano's exceptional character and exemplary life. This declaration culminated in his beatification on 5 November 2006, performed by Pope Benedict XVI. The beatification miracle attributed to Mariano involved the miraculous healing of a child who had been run over by a truck, testifying to the intercessory power of his prayers and his closeness to God.
The beatification celebration took place at the cathedral in São Paulo, Brazil, with Cardinal José Saraiva Martins presiding over the ceremony. Through his beatification, Blessed Mariano De La Mata Aparicio continues to inspire and intercede for all those who seek his assistance and guidance in their journey of faith.
