Blessed Mariano of Roccacasale, also known as Cicchetti, was born on 13 January 1778 in Roccacasale, L'Aquila, Italy, to a humble and devout farm family. His childhood nickname, Cicchetti, which means "snack size" or "little bit," reflected his small stature and gentle nature.
As a young man, Mariano worked as a shepherd on Mount Morrone until the age of 23. It was during this time that he developed a deep love for nature and solitude, which would later become an integral part of his spirituality.
In 1802, Mariano joined the Franciscans at the convent of Saint Nicholas in Arischia, Italy, as a lay brother. He dedicated himself to a life of service, taking on various roles such as cook, gardener, woodworker, and alms beggar for the next 12 years. Mariano's simplicity, humility, and dedication to his tasks endeared him to his fellow friars and the community.
In 1815, Mariano was assigned to the Franciscan convent in Bellegra, Italy, just outside Rome, where he would spend over 50 years serving as the porter. This role allowed him to interact with and assist the numerous pilgrims and the poor who sought help at the convent. Mariano's charitable heart and his firm trust in Divine Providence made him a source of hope and inspiration for those in need. He dispensed alms, provided spiritual guidance, and offered kind words to all who crossed his path.
Blessed Mariano was renowned for his intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He found solace and strength through his Marian piety, often spending hours in prayer before her image. Additionally, Mariano had a profound love for Eucharistic Adoration, finding great joy and peace in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. His commitment to poverty and detachment from worldly possessions was extraordinary; he focused solely on the needs of others, disregarding his personal comfort and well-being.
Despite his limited education, Mariano's deep prayer life, contemplation, and union with God made him a sought-after spiritual advisor. Many came to him seeking his wisdom and guidance in matters of faith and life's challenges. His words carried the weight of authenticity and grace, touching the hearts of those who sought his counsel.
Blessed Mariano of Roccacasale passed away on 31 May 1866, in Bellegra, Rome, Italy, due to natural causes. His selfless service and spiritual journey continue to inspire and guide countless individuals on their path toward holiness.
