Having been called to serve as a missionary, Mario joined the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions and dedicated himself to the work of evangelization. He was known for his deep faith, compassion, and perseverance. Mario's unwavering commitment to his calling led him to be sent to Myanmar (then Burma) to minister to the local population.
Mario's years in Myanmar were filled with immense challenges and hardships. As a missionary, he faced a multitude of obstacles while striving to bring the message of God's love and salvation to the people. His efforts were not in vain, as he was able to touch many lives and make a significant impact on the local community.
Tragically, on 24 May 1950, while in the town of Shadaw, in the Kayah state of Myanmar, Mario's life was cut short by martyrdom. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but it is believed that he was targeted because of his faith and his tireless devotion to the people he served.
Recognizing Mario's extraordinary sacrifice, his cause for beatification was opened by the Catholic Church. On 9 December 2013, his martyrdom was officially decreed by Pope Francis, who venerated him as a martyr for the faith.
One year later, on 24 May 2014, Pope Francis himself presided over the beatification ceremony, held at the Cathedral of San Paolo in Aversa, Caserta, Italy. The event was attended by numerous faithful and dignitaries, including Cardinal Angelo Amato, who formally recognized the beatification of Blessed Mario Vergara.
