Biography

Blessed Mary Of Saint Joseph Alvarado Cardozo, also known as Laura Evangelista Alvarado Cardozo, was born on 25 April 1875 in Choroni, Venezuela. From a young age, she displayed a deep devotion to her Catholic faith. In 1888, at the age of thirteen, Laura made her First Communion and took a private vow of chastity on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

As a young woman, Laura's commitment to her faith led her to establish a catechism school in her home for underprivileged children. Her desire to serve the poor and marginalized only grew stronger when a smallpox epidemic struck her hometown. Laura selflessly worked with the sick, assisting in the hospital set up by her parish priest and spiritual director, Father Vicente Lopez Aveledo.

Witnessing the dire need for dedicated care of the sick and the lack of resources available, Laura and Father Vicente founded the Augustinian Recollect Sisters of the Heart of Jesus in 1901. This religious order, which Laura joined and took the name María of Saint Joseph, focused on nursing and providing compassionate care for the sick, the elderly, and orphans.

María of Saint Joseph professed her religious vows and was officially recognized as the founder of the Order on 13 September 1903. Her tireless dedication to the mission of caring for the poor and neglected led her to establish 37 houses throughout Venezuela where the Augustinian Recollect Sisters could carry out their mission.

To sustain her work, Blessed María cultivated a contemplative life by participating in the creation of Eucharist hosts and spending nights in Eucharistic adoration. This devotion to the Eucharist provided her with spiritual strength and guided her in her mission.

Blessed María Of Saint Joseph Alvarado Cardozo passed away on 2 April 1967 in Maracay, Aragua, Venezuela, due to a blood clot. She was buried in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception Home in Maracay, as per her request. Over the years, her tomb in the chapel became a pilgrimage site. On 19 January 1994, her incorrupt body was discovered, a sign of her holiness. Subsequently, in September 1994, her remains were re-interred in a new sarcophagus in the same chapel.

Her virtuous life and unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church led to her veneration. On 7 March 1992, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues. Following this, she was beatified on 17 May 1995 at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy, by Pope John Paul II. Blessed María Of Saint Joseph Alvarado Cardozo holds the distinction of becoming the first native of Venezuela to be beatified.

The beatification miracle associated with her involved the miraculous cure of Sister Teresa Silva, an event that testified to the power of Blessed María's intercession. Today, she continues to be revered as a holy example of selfless love and service, particularly among the Augustinian Recollect Sisters and the people of Venezuela.
