Biography

Blessed Mateu Casals Mas, born on 10 September 1883 in Bagá, Barcelona, Spain, was a dedicated member of the Claretian congregation. He professed his vows on 15 August 1903 and later ordained as a priest on 13 June 1911.

As a Claretian missionary, Blessed Mateu Casals Mas fervently served the Catholic Church and faithfully spread the teachings of Jesus Christ. He devoted himself to ministering to the spiritual needs of the people, especially during a challenging period in Spain's history – the Spanish Civil War.

Tragically, during this turbulent time, Blessed Mateu Casals Mas faced persecution for his faith. On 5 September 1936, he was martyred in San Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain, for boldly professing his allegiance to Catholicism.

Recognizing his unwavering commitment to the Church, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 21 December 2016, issuing a decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, on 21 October 2017, at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over the beatification ceremony of Blessed Mateu Casals Mas. The ceremony celebrated his beatification, acknowledging his status as a Blessed and honoring his sacrifice for the faith.

Blessed Mateu Casals Mas is honored and remembered on two feast days – 5 September and 1 February – as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. On these days, the Catholic faithful commemorate his exemplary life and offer prayers for his intercession.

Although specific details about his representation are not provided, we can envision Blessed Mateu Casals Mas as a symbol of steadfast faith, courage, and martyrdom. His life and sacrificial death are an inspiration for believers, reminding us of the importance of standing firm in our convictions even in the face of opposition.
