Biography

Blessed Matthaeus Choe Ingil was a layman in the apostolic vicariate of Korea during the late 18th century. He was born in Seoul, South Korea, in the year 1764, and grew up in a devout Catholic family. Matthaeus Choe Ingil dedicated his life to the service of God and the spread of the Catholic faith in Korea.

During this time, the Catholic Church faced intense persecution in Korea, which was undergoing political and social changes that made it increasingly difficult for Christians to practice their faith openly. Despite the dangers and risks involved, Matthaeus Choe Ingil fearlessly assisted and supported Blessed Iacobus Chu Mun-mo, a fellow Catholic who was actively spreading the teachings of Christianity.

Matthaeus Choe Ingil's strong faith and unwavering commitment to the Church led him to assist Blessed Iacobus Chu Mun-mo in various ways, providing him with shelter, protection, and resources necessary to carry out his mission. Their collaboration not only served the spiritual needs of the Catholic community but also demonstrated their courage in the face of persecution.

On June 28, 1795, in Seoul, South Korea, Matthaeus Choe Ingil was apprehended for his involvement in supporting the spreading of Catholicism. He was subsequently martyred, giving up his life for his faith and devotion to God. His martyrdom serves as an inspiration to Christians everywhere, as he remained steadfast in his beliefs despite the grave consequences he faced.

Blessed Matthaeus Choe Ingil, along with other Korean martyrs, is commemorated on the feast days of June 28 and September 20. Their collective sacrifice and witness to the Catholic faith have been recognized and celebrated by the Catholic Church.

In recognition of his martyrdom and exemplary life, Matthaeus Choe Ingil was venerated by Pope Francis on February 7, 2014, through a decree on martyrdom. This veneration was followed by his beatification, which took place on August 15, 2014, also under the direction of Pope Francis.

Blessed Matthaeus Choe Ingil's life serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and resilience that individuals can find in their faith, even in the face of severe persecution. His unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and his selfless acts of support for fellow believers exemplify the essence of Christian love and sacrifice.
