Biography

Blessed Maximino Serrano Sáiz, also known as José Alfonso, was a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, commonly known as the De La Salle Brothers. He was born on May 29, 1887, in San Adrián de Juarros, Burgos, Spain.

In his youth, Maximino felt called to religious life and joined the De La Salle Brothers, an institute dedicated to the education of young people. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his vocation and embraced the charism of his religious congregation.

During the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Spain was immersed in a violent conflict between various political factions. The war had a profound impact on the Church, and many religious men and women faced persecution due to their faith.

Blessed Maximino Serrano Sáiz was among those who suffered martyrdom during this tumultuous period. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his religious vocation and his dedication to the education and formation of young people. However, his strong faith and affiliation with the De La Salle Brothers made him the target of those opposed to the Catholic Church.

On November 8, 1936, Maximino was martyred in Paracuellos de Jarama, a village near Madrid, Spain. His martyrdom stands as a witness to his steadfast faith and his willingness to lay down his life for his beliefs, even in the face of great adversity.

In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Maximino Serrano Sáiz was venerated on December 19, 2011, by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree of martyrdom. This acknowledgment paved the way for his beatification, which took place on October 13, 2013, by Pope Francis.

The beatification of Blessed Maximino serves as a reminder of the courage and faith of the countless men and women who suffered persecution during the Spanish Civil War. His example inspires us to stand firm in our beliefs and, if necessary, to bear witness to our faith even in the most challenging circumstances.
