Biography

Blessed Michele Pío Fasoli, also known as Michael Pío da Zerbo, was a Franciscan priest and missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith. He was born on 3 May 1676 in Zerbo, a small town in Pavia, Italy.

Joining the Franciscan order, Father Michele embraced a life of poverty, humility, and selfless service. His devotion and passion for sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ led him to embark on a mission to Ethiopia, a land known for its rich Christian history. Father Michele traveled to Ethiopia with the intention of nurturing and strengthening the faith of the Christian community there.

Unfortunately, his arrival coincided with a time of great turmoil and persecution for Christians in Ethiopia. In 1716, Emperor Iyasu declared a brutal campaign against Christianity, ordering the arrest and persecution of believers. Father Michele was among those targeted for his unyielding faith.

Despite the threat to his own life, Father Michele courageously refused to renounce his Christian beliefs. His steadfast commitment to his faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 3 March 1716, in the city of Gondar, Ethiopia, he was stoned to death by a hostile mob. He gave his life for his unwavering dedication to Jesus Christ and the Gospel.

Blessed Michele Pío Fasoli's martyrdom is a testament to his deep love for God and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. His ultimate sacrifice is a reminder to all believers of the importance of faith in the face of adversity. His memory is cherished within the Franciscan community and serves as an inspiration to all who encounter his story.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II officially declared Father Michele Pío Fasoli's venerability on 28 March 1988. Later, on 20 November 1988, he was beatified by the same pontiff, further solidifying his status as a model of faith and devotion for Catholics worldwide.

Today, Blessed Michele Pío Fasoli is honored and celebrated on the feast days of 3 March and 4 March by the Franciscans. His life and sacrifice serve as an enduring example of courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to the faith. Through his intercession, believers seek to draw strength and inspiration in their own spiritual journeys.
