Biography
Blessed Francisco Zanfredini, also known as Francisco of Pesaro, Francisco Cichi, Francesco, Francis, Cecchi, Cecco, and Cichi, was born in 1270 in Pesaro, Italy. Unfortunately, he was orphaned at a very young age. However, despite the hardships he faced, Francisco's life was marked by his great generosity and profound devotion to God.
When he came of age, Francisco made the incredible decision to give away all his possessions and embrace a life of poverty. He joined the Franciscan order as a tertiary and became a hermit at Montegranaro, Italy. It was there that he dedicated his life to contemplation, prayer, and acts of penance.
Francisco was deeply inspired by the life and teachings of Blessed Pietro di Foligno, a prominent Franciscan spiritual figure. Under his guidance, Francisco continued to grow spiritually and deepen his commitment to the Christian faith.
Not content with a solitary life of prayer, Francisco actively sought ways to serve his community. He established chapels both in his hometown of Pesaro and at his hermitage in Montegranaro. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of a convent on Colle Accio near Pesaro.
Driven by compassion, Francisco tirelessly collected alms to restore churches and support hospitals. His devotion to helping the sick and the destitute led him to co-found the Brotherhood of the Annunciation together with Blessed Michelina of Pesaro in 1347. This organization was dedicated to caring for the sick and providing dignified burial for the dead.
For an incredible fifty years, Francisco exemplified a life of piety, self-sacrifice, and humility. The people of the region held him in high regard, not only for his charitable works but for his wisdom and guidance. His unwavering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary was especially noteworthy, as he sought her intercession and venerated her throughout his life.
On August 5, 1350, Francisco Zanfredini passed away peacefully in his hermitage at Montegranaro, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. His earthly remains were initially laid to rest in Montegranaro, but later, they were re-interred under the main altar of the cathedral of Pesaro, Italy.
Due to his exemplary life of holiness and virtuous actions, Francisco Zanfredini was beatified on March 31, 1859, by Pope Pius IX, who officially confirmed his cultus. Today, Blessed Francisco Zanfredini is remembered as a true model of Christian virtue, inspiring others to live lives of generosity, prayer, and service to the less fortunate. His feast day is celebrated on August 5, with some calendars also recognizing him on August 16 and October 1.
