Biography

Blessed Miquel Baixeras Berenguer, also known as Miguel Baixeras Berenguer, was a devout Claretian member who dedicated his life to the service of God and his people. He was born on February 4, 1908, in Castelltersol, Barcelona, Spain.

Miquel Baixeras Berenguer joined the Congregation of Claretians, a religious order founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret, known for its missionary and educational work. He professed as a member of the order on August 15, 1924, demonstrating his commitment to the Claretian charism.

His journey of faith continued as he was ordained a priest on June 21, 1931. Father Baixeras Berenguer found his calling in serving the spiritual needs of others, particularly in proclaiming the Gospel and spreading the love and mercy of Christ.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Father Baixeras Berenguer became a victim of religious persecution. He was martyred for his faith on July 25, 1936, in Lleida, Spain. Alongside 108 fellow Claretians, he courageously bore witness to his beliefs, even in the face of intense persecution. The Spanish Civil War was a brutal conflict, marked by violence and a targeted onslaught against the Catholic Church and its clergy. Many individuals, like Father Baixeras Berenguer, were unjustly executed during this tumultuous period.

Recognizing the heroic virtue and sacrifice of Father Baixeras Berenguer, Pope Francis declared him venerable on December 21, 2016. The pontiff acknowledged that Father Baixeras Berenguer's martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to Christ.

Later, on October 21, 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Miquel Baixeras Berenguer, along with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.

Blessed Miquel Baixeras Berenguer's feast day is celebrated on July 25, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is also honored on February 1, as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

As a martyr of the Catholic Church, Blessed Miquel Baixeras Berenguer serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the enduring power of faith, even in the face of persecution. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and encourage believers to stand strong in their convictions and to live lives of holiness and devotion.
