Biography

Blessed Natalia of Toulouse, also known as Natalia of Gaillac, was born in the year 1312 in Gaillac, a town in the south of France. At the age of 16, she moved to the city of Toulouse to pursue an education. Little is known about her early life, but it was during her time in Toulouse that Natalia's spiritual journey would take a significant turn.

Inspired by a deep desire to serve God and His people, Natalia joined the Mercedarians, a religious order founded to redeem Christian captives from Muslim slavery. She was received into the Order by Blessed Bernardo of Poncelli, who recognized her fervor and commitment to the cause. Though Natalia was unable to undertake the perilous journeys into Muslim-occupied territories to physically ransom the enslaved Christians, she dedicated herself to a life of intercessory prayer.

One of Natalia's most well-known attributes was her zealous prayer life. Despite being confined within the confines of the Mercedarian convent in Toulouse, she fervently prayed for the souls and liberation of the Christian captives held as slaves. Her prayers were not only focused on their release but also on their ability to maintain their faith amidst such harsh circumstances. Natalia's devotion and perseverance in this ministry earned her a reputation for her unwavering faith and compassionate heart.

Divine intervention seemed to affirm the value of Natalia's prayerful work. It is said that she received a vision of Christ Himself, who appeared to her and encouraged her in her ministry of intercession. This confirmation from our Lord further fueled her dedication, bringing solace to her own soul and offering hope to those in captivity.

On the 4th of July, in the year 1355, Blessed Natalia of Toulouse passed away from natural causes in her beloved city of Toulouse. Her life was one of selflessness and devotion, exemplifying the virtues of faith, prayer, and compassion. Although she was not officially recognized as a saint or beatified, the Mercedarians honor her memory and celebrate her feast day on the 4th of July, commemorating her noble deeds and her role in their work of freeing the enslaved Christians.
