Biography

Blessed Nelson Rutilio Lemus Chávez was a young, single layman who lived in the archdiocese of San Salvador, El Salvador. He was born on November 10, 1960, in El Paisnal, a town located in the San Salvador region. Blessed Nelson dedicated his life to the service of the Church, particularly within his local community.

Tragically, Blessed Nelson's life was cut short when he was martyred. On March 12, 1977, while on his way to serve at Saturday night Mass, he was shot by El Salvadoran security forces. The incident occurred around 5 pm on the road between Aguilares and El Paisnal, in his hometown of San Salvador. Blessed Nelson's untimely death was a result of his unwavering commitment to his faith, even in the face of danger.

His zealous devotion and the circumstances of his death earned him the title of martyr. On February 21, 2020, Pope Francis officially declared him venerable, recognizing his heroic virtue. Then, on January 22, 2022, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Nelson Rutilio Lemus Chávez, placing him in a higher state of honor within the Catholic Church.
