Blessed Nicolás Alberich Lluch, also known as Brother Valeriano Luis, was a devout Catholic and a member of the Salesians. He was born on 1 January 1898 in Benicarló, Castellón, Spain. From an early age, Nicolás showed a deep love and dedication to his faith, which eventually led him to join the Salesian order.
As a Salesian brother, Brother Valeriano Luis devoted his life to serving others and spreading the message of God's love. He wholeheartedly embraced the teachings of Saint John Bosco, the founder of the Salesians, who emphasized the importance of education and spiritual formation for young people.
However, Brother Valeriano Luis lived during a time of great political unrest and turmoil in Spain. The Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, posed numerous challenges to religious individuals and communities.
Despite the dangers, Brother Valeriano Luis remained resolute in his faith, continuing to carry out his duties as a Salesian.
Tragically, Brother Valeriano Luis was martyred on 23 August 1936 in Valderrobles, Teruel, Spain. Although specific details of his martyrdom may not be available, it is known that he bravely chose to stand firm in his beliefs, even in the face of persecution and violence.
The courageous witness of Brother Valeriano Luis and his unwavering commitment to his vocation did not go unnoticed. On 22 June 2004, Pope John Paul II officially recognized his martyrdom through a decree, paving the way for his beatification. Brother Valeriano Luis was then beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 28 October 2007, acknowledging his holiness and sacrifice.
