Blessed Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta

Blessed Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta, born on 16 February 1916 in Ujué, Navarra, Spain, was a devoted member of the Claretians. He professed his vows on 15 August 1932, dedicating his life to serving God and spreading the teachings of the Catholic faith.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta tragically became a victim of religious persecution. On 26 July 1936, he was martyred in Lleida, Spain, when he was mercilessly shot for his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs.

Blessed Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta is honored and remembered for his bravery and steadfastness in the face of religious persecution. His feast days are celebrated on 26 July and 1 February, as part of the commemoration of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

Recognizing the sacrificial nature of his death and the testimony of his faith, Pope Francis declared Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta venerable on 21 December 2016, through a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony celebrated at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, recognizing the significance of Onésimo Agorreta Zabaleta's martyrdom and his elevation to the rank of the Blessed.
