Biography

Blessed Pascual Araguàs Y Guàrdia, also known as Francesco Araguas e Carmen Guardia, was born on 17 May 1899 in Pont de Claverol, Pallars Jussà, Lleida, Spain. He hailed from a devout and impoverished family, which instilled in him a strong piety from an early age.

At the tender age of 13, Pascual entered the junior seminary, displaying a keen sense of vocation and a sincere desire to serve God. His commitment to his religious calling led him to be ordained as a priest in the diocese of Urgell, Spain, on 3 April 1923.

Following his ordination, Blessed Pascual dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the pastoral care of his flock. He served as a co-adjutor and parish priest in several towns, pouring his energy and compassion into ministering to his parishioners.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Pascual Araguàs Y Guàrdia fell victim to religious persecution. On 13 August 1936, he was martyred for his unwavering faith in Christ. He was shot at the gate of the cemetery in Salàs de Pallars, Pallars Jussà, Lleida, Spain.

The enduring holiness and courage displayed by Blessed Pascual did not go unnoticed. Recognizing his virtuous life and his ultimate sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 19 April 2004. Shortly after, on 29 October 2005, Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the ranks of the blessed during a beatification ceremony held at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. This momentous occasion was celebrated by Cardinal Saraiva Martins.
