Blessed Pedro Asúa Mendía

Blessed Pedro Asúa Mendía, also known as Pedro Asúa, was born on August 30, 1890, in Valmaseda, Vizcaya, Spain. He received his education from the Jesuits, who instilled in him a deep sense of faith and a passion for learning. After completing his studies, Pedro trained as an architect, ultimately graduating in 1915.

With his architectural skills, Pedro Asúa dedicated his talent to building schools, churches, and houses for religious institutions. Tragically, Pedro's life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War, a period marked by intense religious persecution. On August 29, 1936, in Liendo, Santander, Spain, Pedro Asúa was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. His steadfast devotion to God, even in the face of persecution, serves as an inspiring example of courage and dedication.

Pedro Asúa’s relics were interred in the cathedral of Vitoria, Spain, where they remain venerated to this day. Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Francis proclaimed Pedro Asúa Mendía as Blessed on November 1, 2014. The Beatification ceremony, which took place in Vitoria, was a momentous occasion in the Diocese to honor a faithful servant who demonstrated unwavering dedication to God and the Church.
