Biography

Blessed Pedro of Santa Maria, also known as Pedro de Santa María and Pedro Martínez, was a Mercedarian friar who lived during the 14th century. He was born in Valladolid, Spain, to devout Catholic parents who instilled in him a strong love for God and the Church. Pedro entered the religious life and joined the Mercedarian Order, known for its mission to rescue Christians held captive by Muslim forces.

Pedro was assigned to the convent of Seville, where he lived a life of prayer, study, and service to the poor. Alongside his fellow friar, Blessed Simone de Lara, Pedro embarked on a courageous journey to north Africa. Their mission was to ransom enslaved Christians and offer them a chance for freedom and a return to their faith.

For several years, Pedro and Simone tirelessly worked in the hostile regions of north Africa, often risking their own safety to negotiate the release of Christian prisoners. They faced numerous challenges, including facing off against hostile Muslim leaders and enduring harsh conditions. Despite all these perils, their unwavering faith and determination led to the liberation of countless Christians from captivity.

Tragically, while returning home to Spain, Pedro and Simone were captured by Moorish pirates who demanded that they renounce Christianity. Refusing to deny their faith, the two friars were cruelly thrown overboard, meeting a martyr's death in the depths of the sea. Their martyrdom was a testament to their unyielding commitment to Christ and their dedication to saving Christian souls.

Blessed Pedro of Santa Maria's selflessness and bravery in the face of danger have made him a revered figure in the Mercedarian Order. His feast day is celebrated on August 13th, alongside other members of the Mercedarian community. Despite not being officially recognized as a saint, Blessed Pedro's story continues to inspire and encourage believers to stand firm in their faith and work for the liberation and salvation of others.
