Biography

Blessed Pelayo José Granado Prieto, born on 30 July 1895 in Santa María de los Llanos, Cuenca, Spain, was a Vincentian priest who met a martyr's death during the Spanish Civil War. His feast days are celebrated on 27 August and 6 November as one of the Vincentian Martyrs.

Pelayo José Granado Prieto was known for his unwavering dedication to his faith and the service of others. From an early age, he felt a strong call to the priesthood and entered the Vincentian order, also known as the Congregation of the Mission, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul.

After completing his studies, Granado Prieto was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to the spiritual and material well-being of his community, especially the poor and marginalized. He tirelessly preached the Gospel, taught catechism classes, and engaged in various charitable works to alleviate the suffering of those in need.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought an atmosphere of intense persecution against the Catholic Church. The anti-Catholic sentiment that prevailed during this time led to the martyrdom of numerous priests and religious figures, including Granado Prieto.

On 27 August 1936, in the city of Gijón, Asturias, Spain, Granado Prieto was arrested, accused of being a "reactionary" priest and an enemy of the Republic. Despite the danger he faced, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith, refusing to renounce his beliefs or betray his calling as a priest.

Pelayo José Granado Prieto was subjected to brutal treatment and torture, yet he never wavered in his resolve. He remained a symbol of faith, hope, and resilience, even in the face of persecution. Finally, on that fateful day, his life was cruelly extinguished, but his memory and witness would endure.

In recognition of his courageous martyrdom, Pope Francis declared the decree of martyrdom on 5 July 2013, and on 13 October 2013, Granado Prieto was beatified by the same pontiff, who honored his sacrifice and confirmed his status as a Blessed of the Catholic Church.

Blessed Pelayo José Granado Prieto's life and martyrdom serve as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices made by countless faithful during times of persecution. His story stands as an inspiration to all those who face adversity in their pursuit of truth and justice. May his intercession continue to strengthen and guide the faithful in their own journey of faith.
