Biography

Blessed Pere Vallmitjana Abarca, also known as Pere Vallmitjana i Abarca, was a Catholic priest and member of the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation. He was born on May 19, 1875, in Barcelona, Spain. Throughout his life, Blessed Pere dedicated himself to serving God and his community through his religious calling.

Blessed Pere joined the Subiaco Congregation, which is known for its commitment to prayer, contemplation, and monastic life following the Rule of Saint Benedict. As a member of the congregation, he embraced a life of spiritual discipline, community living, and devotion to the sacraments.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Spain underwent intense ideological and political conflicts. It was a period marked by religious persecution, with many clergy members targeted for their faith. Unfortunately, Blessed Pere Vallmitjana Abarca became one of the victims of this persecution.

On February 15, 1937, in Cerdanyola, Barcelona, Spain, Blessed Pere Vallmitjana Abarca was martyred for his steadfast commitment to his beliefs. He remained faithful to his priestly vocation even in the face of violent opposition, giving his life for his faith.

Blessed Pere's extraordinary witness of faith, sacrifice, and martyrdom was recognized by the Catholic Church. On June 28, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI decreed the martyrdom of Pere Vallmitjana Abarca, proclaiming him venerable. This act recognized his heroic virtue and offered him the title of "Blessed," signifying that he is now in the beatific vision of God.

Continuing this recognition, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis presided over his beatification ceremony in Tarragona, Spain. This ceremony celebrated the official declaration and public acknowledgment of Blessed Pere Vallmitjana Abarca's sanctity and intercessory power.

Blessed Pere Vallmitjana Abarca's life serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity and persecution due to their faith. His unwavering dedication to Christ, even in the face of danger, invites us to reflect on the importance of living out our faith with courage and conviction. As a martyr, he stands as a powerful reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ, to whom he devoted his entire life.
